How Much Protein Do Men Actually Need?

The official answer is 0.8g per kilogram of body weight per day.

For an 85kg man, that’s 68 grams of protein.

That is the RDA — the Recommended Dietary Allowance — and it represents the minimum amount of protein required to prevent deficiency in a sedentary adult. It was not designed to optimize muscle mass, performance, body composition, or the demands of a physically and cognitively active lifestyle.

The actual amount of protein a man needs is significantly higher. Here’s the evidence behind the real numbers — and how to hit them without tracking.


Why the RDA is the wrong target

The RDA for protein was established through nitrogen balance studies — measuring protein intake versus nitrogen excretion to determine the minimum needed to avoid muscle breakdown.

For maintaining muscle during a caloric deficit: 2.0–2.4g per kilogram. Higher protein intake during weight loss is specifically protective against muscle loss — the body is more likely to burn stored fat when protein is adequate.

For men over 35: At the high end of the range. Anabolic resistance — the blunted muscle protein synthesis response in older men — means more protein is needed to generate the same signal that lower protein would produce in a younger man.

The protein lever for weight loss specifically

Protein is uniquely valuable for men trying to lose weight for two reasons.

First, protein is the most satiating macronutrient by calorie. High-protein meals reduce hunger and suppress total calorie intake more effectively than high-carbohydrate or high-fat meals of equal caloric density. Men who increase protein intake typically eat less total food without trying.
